Depart 08:00 From Sedgefield, Wilderness or George.
We embark on the spectacular Montagu Mountain Pass which was built from 1844 to 1847 without modern road construction equipment.
The Mountain Pass can truly be considered a marvel, taking into account the circumstances and resources available during those days.
We stop at short intervals to be amazed by the spectacular views offered by the mountain pass. There is an array of trees, wild flowers and some unique bird species to be observed on the Outeniqua mountains. During our stops we will enjoy a steaming cup of coffee or Rooibos Tea with rusks
The total distance to the summit is 11km, this will take in the region of 90 to 120 minutes, depending on our stops made for photographic opportunities and indulge in this scenic wonderland. The crest is 854m above sea level.
The remains of the old Blacksmith shop can still be seen on the pass, used by the road builders during those forgotten days.
From here one can take a stroll further up the mountains to the Cradock Pass. This was the first crossing over the mountains by the Voortrekkers [Pioneers] with their ox-wagons. Cutting made by the wheels of the ox-wagon is still visible in the sandstone rocks on the trail.
From the summit we descend down to Harold Wines, for a leisurely breakfast/lunch and some wine tasting and a tour of the cellar. We depart from Harold wines, descending down the Montagu Mountain Pass to arrive at our collection point at about 15:00 the afternoon.
